The thrum of machinery and sparking electrical wires resonates all around you and deep unsettling dark swallows you whole even though your eyes are open. Where are you? You take only a moment to inwardly think, and then you remember.
You're inside the PC. How you know that is beyond you right now except for an innate understanding, like a closely held truth. Or faith, even. An inevitability in the universe— your presence here is not a question. It's a //necessity.//
A quick glance around offers you nothing but a small white dot in the distance. A light.
It'd be easy to assume that you were dead, the classic tale of having to walk towards that light and into the unknown... But as the light grows closer to you on its own regard, so too does the heat of Summer. An unfortunate reminder of your own mortality, and the fact that you must be alive to be able to feel it.
[[Allow it to happen]]You wave a hand out into the empty space between you and the light as if attempting to say hello, or to guage its intent. Your eyes squint a little to try and welcome it fully. It's too bright, but through a little focus and determination you can make out some features.
First two eyes, wide open and confused... Though seemingly dead.
Then, a bandaid. A humanoid figure, perhaps. //And a clumsy one at that.//
And finally, two big bunny ears of which you recall seeing previously on this site, //maybe//. It's difficult to remember when heat seems to call for your consumement. A dizzying array of emotions settling thick into your bones.
Regardless of your state of process, the figure becomes clearer in your mind and so too does the world around you become a little brighter. A bit easier to comprehend. And then it hits you all at once...
That's ''Enri!''
[[Say Hello]] / [[Berate Her]]"Enri!" You warmly greet her, reaching out your arms to pull her in for a tight hug. "Boy am I glad to see you!" You cheer. And you are. Only Enri's presence would calm you in such a state.
Enri in return stiffens up at the sudden physical contact, but nonetheless she allows you to touch her. The sounds of the PC seem to grow quiet around her, and hope filters in through the wires.
"Have you been here this whole time?" You ask earnestly, hoping to find a way out of the PC predicament you've apparently awoke to. If she's stuck here too, then maybe you can work together to get out!
But Enri only sighs at your question, pulling away from the hug and staring you down. It's not a look you're used to from her, and yet even given her rather emotionless expression range she still manages to unsettle you a little.
"Where have you been?" She hums monotonously. It's not much of a question as it is a resignation, but you still feel as though you should answer her either way.
[[Enjoying the sun]] / [[I don't remember]]A welcome sight for sure, but more than that, a deep upset rises from your tummy to your chest. Like putrid bile that was once resting now forced to the surface of your tongue.
"Where have you been?" You sigh, annoyance lacing your words at her sudden appearance. She's been gone for God knows how long now so you can't help but berate her a little for leaving you for so long. "I've been waiting, you know. You could have let me know where you were going at least!"
Her bunny ears twitch in response, a hidden conversation happening in plain view. You wish you could hear it too, but alas, you are not an Enri.
"Sorry." She simply sulks, kicking the ground with her feet. "I got a little lost. Where have you been?"
[[Enjoying the sun]] / [[I don't remember]]You try to recall what you've been doing recently. There's been a lot, hasn't there? Even when you feel like your days have been wasted: still there were contents. To condense a whole season down into a simple sentence... It's not easy.
But you try anyway. "Enjoying the sun." You proudly exclaim, relishing in the multicoloured glow of PC parts that spin arround you.
Enri nods along with you, basking in the heat of the PC that feels at least ten times hotter than your Summer! It's a bit unbearable, honestly, but you shouldn't turn down friendly chatter from Enri. It'd be rude not to indulge her.
"Summer is ending. I can feel it on my skin," Enri agrees with your thoughts. "Sticky sweet and sickly. I feel like a bug caught in a trap in here, the incessant buzz from my wings yelling a cacophony of failure. Over and over again they flap dumbly, not unlike the inescapable heat of the fan. It's too hot, isn't it? I feel like I'm melting all over again and I can't quite muster the strength to reply to the pixels."
Yeah... That's what summer has really felt like, hasn't it?
"Summer is ending. But the heat tries to trap me."
[[Question her meaning]] / [[Ask her for a way out]]It's difficult to try and remember what you've been doing and where you've been. Perhaps it's because of the heat eminatting from each pixel of the PC screen, or maybe it's because you haven't done much of importance all Summer. Where have you been?
"Nowhere, really." You answer honestly, brows furrowed in an attempt of deep concentration but the fan behind you disallows deep thought.
Enri appears to be dissatisfied with this answer, her nose twitching in displeasure at your noncimmital response. But it'd be rude of her to mention, so you're thankful for her lack of verbal judgement. Instead, she tries to change the subject.
"Summer is ending. I can feel it on my skin," Enri comments mostly to herself. "Sticky sweet and sickly. I feel like a bug caught in a trap in here, the incessant buzz from my wings yelling a cacophony of failure. Over and over again they flap dumbly, not unlike the inescapable heat of the night. It's too hot, isn't it? I feel like I'm melting all over again and I can't quite muster the strength to reply to the pixels."
//What is she talking about?// You struggle to grasp much meaning from her words, but still you listen. Because it's polite. Because she offered you the same kindness.
"Summer is ending. But the heat tries to trap me."
[[//Tries?//]] / [[Ignore her rambling and press on]]"Trap you? What ever do you mean, dear Enri?"
It appears that your voice is soothing to the little lost alien girl, a small smile tugging on her nonexistent lips. She's weird like that.
"Well, it's a bit difficult to explain..."
"It's okay, you can try." You say to reassure her... And it works! Good job!
"Um... You know when the sun makes you feel all lethargic and slow?"
You do. Of course you do, because you're thankful that it'll soon stop.
"Or when you're desperately trapped under the bedsheets in the middle of a Summer night, a mess of limbs and sweat?" She asks, awaiting you approval, but she continues just before you're able to provide it. "There's a lot of glue in here. In the PC, I mean. And I'm pancaked between the pixels, my own personal never ending Summer. Can you feel it too? How the glass of the monitor is too hot to the touch? I feel like I'm melting!" She erupts into childish laughter, or you assume so. //How does one laugh without a mouth?//
"I don't know how to get out, and I fear that even if I learn how to escape the wires and the lights— I won't have the willpower to //move//."
[[Reassure her]] / [[Ignore her rambling and press on]]Regardless of if you understand her ramblings or not, you have more important matters at hand! Namely: escaping the blistering heat of this Summer PC— hopefully with her in tow. And so yuo ask her for more information seeing as she's been here longer than you, that'd probably be the best course of action.
"Do you know a way out?"
She quickly shakes her head, insisting on pointing out the obvious. "If I did, I wouldn't still be here. It's so hot it's uncomfortable, isn't it?"
"It is. We should escape."
"Then lead the way!"
Enri often relies on you for assitance and guidance, but you figure it's probably best you take the lead in this investigation anyway given the fact that this //is// your PC! Nobody knows this place better than you, nobody, //not even Enri// has touch all its innards as often as you have. Like the very organs that sit inside of your sweating body right now, you can diagnose and fix any issue that arises— even if you have to seek some of your own assistance first— so surely you can work out how to escape its too warm belly!
You try to recall how the inside of the PC looks. The jumbled mess of wires, the many lights, and of course: the scorching heat. It's a bit difficult to orient yourself under such an oppresive atmosphere, but you think you've got it. "North." You decide. "We should go north."
And with that, you eagerly grab Enri's hand and lead her north. She's more than happy to follow, skipping behind you as you make your way through the sun and towards Autumn escape.
[[Keep going north]]The implication of //tries// opens up the possibility of //hope//. There's still faith yet to escape your PC relative unharmed.
"So you're telling me there's a chance?" You ask Enri, adopting a serious tone so that she may grasp the seriousness of the situation.
"Something like that. For you, maybe."
No, no. That won't do at all! Either you're leaving with Enri or you're not leaving at all!
... Is what you'd like to say, but selfish self-preservation easily takes over, and you gulp down your words to set them straight before asking for further clarification. "Why only me?"
A simple enough question, but you know Enri better than that. What seems simple is oftentimes not with her, and you can almost hear her own cogs working overtime in that empty little head of hers— there has to be //something// there given the fact that there's no brain, right?
"Dunno. Can just feel it, y'know? Intoo... Intuition, right?"
"Yeah, that's the right word. Good job!" You praise her, and she beams in response.
"Well, yeah! My intuition is telling me that I'm stuck here, for now at least. Until the end of Summer, maybe..." She counts on her four fingers, one by one, as if measuring the weight of the seasons within her tiny palm alone. The sight makes you want to reach out to her, //scream// for her release, but the heat bogs you down. Makes you lethargic, //slow//. It's difficult to work under these conditions, so how Enri has managed to survive so far is beyond you.
She sighs solomely. "Or maybe I just don't want to leave. Mama always said I was a quitter!"
She's lying, she doesn't have a mom. Even her bunny ears seem to be scolding her given the sheepish smile she offers you immediately after. "Sorry," She starts, looking at anything but you. "I just don't know what to do... I'm really lost and scared..."
[[Reassure her]]She's talking too wildly for you to make sense of her words, or maybe the heat is starting to get to you. Or finally getting to you, it's difficult to tell when all you can feel is //burning//.
All the way from your fingertips to your toes is //hot//. Boiled lava draining your system of energy as you dismiss Enri rudely. "'Kay, whatever." You begin, a sharp sting of sun hitting the nerves in your back and causing you to fall to your knees. Still, you persist. "Guess I'll find my own way out since you're being so //weird//." You spit your words, coughing up some magma in the process as Enri watches with curiosity.
She's not mad, you can tell from her blank expression. She's just as confused as you are though, and she tentatively reaches a hand out to feel your temperature. "Hot." Is all she says, kneeling before you as you lay almost flat on the ground from the sheer heat coursing through your bloodstream. She gives you a small pat, then promptly stands up to leave. You'd ask her not to if you had any tongue left to speak, but it sits like soup in your mouth at the moment.
The promise of Autumn is so close, and yet you're unable to move to meet it. If only you'd tried to understand her better, worked together to find a way out!
But it's no use now. Not as the Summer Sun comes to greet you, blinding you as soon as her presence is known— but you don't need eyes to see her.
"Weclome." The sun greets you, fiery death promised on her surface while you seem to melt //into// the wires of your PC. It's hot. You wish the sun would just go away already.
You mumble something, already forgetting that you can't speak without a tongue. So silly! Even Enri knows that! What is it you're tryhing to say? ''Help me''? ''I'm sorry''? ''I need a nice cold shower''? They all mean the same thing at the end of the day, don't they?
[[Think the words and pray]]//Oh//. So it's like that, is it? Well... Far be it for you not to help a friend in need, right!
"My sweet Enri, it's okay. I understand." You reach out to pat her head, and her bunny ears wiggle in response. Her hair is tacky to the touch, almost //slimey// in texture. You try not to cringe in front of her as you retract your hand to clean it off. "We can try to escape together, if you'd like?"
At that, her ears perk up. It almost looks as if her bandage is about to slip off her flat nose given the heat, but you'll pick it right back up for her to slap back on, won't you?
"I'd like that very much, friend!"
//Ah...// She's so cute when she's happy! More than anything she'd love a tight reassuring hug right now, you can //feel// her yearn for it, but you decide not to. Not with the limited pancake pixel parameters or the blazing heat from the power being turned on.
Instead, you...
[[Extend a helping hand]]"C'mon, let's look around!" You cheer for her, because despite the seemingly dire circumstances it helps to remain positive. You feel as though Enri could use some of it right about now, considering you've got no idea how long she's been lost within your PC. "I know this place like the back of my hand, I'm sure we'll find our way out sooner or later!"
"You really think so?" She timidly whispers, self doubt plaguing her words. That's just like her, to follow along behind you without truly believing in herself. "Because— Well, because..."
Huh? What's she hesitating for?! "What is it, Enri?" You inquire, but she shies away from your question. Even as you stop to regard her she tries to melt into a puddle on the ground before you. "Don't you want to get out?"
"More than anything!" Her tone is defiant, almost scolding to a degree.
"Then what's the issue?"
She sighs, anxiously looking around the spinning machine she finds herself trapped in. Rainbow lights illuminate her and the stench of //heat// surrounds her. "I— I want a nap, first."
[[Allow her]] / [[Disallow her]]A nap? Well, it is rather warm at the moment. And you certainly relate to needing to close your eyes in the unforgiving heat— So maybe a nap is the right decision! She's so clever, isn't she?
"Is that okay?" She whispers, her words barely audible over the loud fan behind her.
It only takes you a moment to consider, the harsh heat of the air swiftly convince you that— "Yes, Enri. It's okay, we can nap."
Bunny ears bounce at your acceptance and she lets go of your hand, finding comfort in a hammock of wires to lay upon the moment you finish speaking. Like a true friend she pats a wire next to her, inviting you to join such blissful slumber.
"Come! It's rather comfortable, I assure you." She blinks up at you, and you trust her judgement given how long she's been lost.
Slowly, you find your own wire next to Enri. You're gentle when swatting the stray ones out of your way, finding a thick one to rest your overheated body on top of. All that's left to do is...
[[Sleep]]A nap, in this heat?! No way would that be a good idea! Besides—
"Isn't it better for us to escape as soon as possible?" You whisper shout to her as if someone, or something, was watching you. It's not like you have any evidence of such, but rather a gut feeling. Something you should never ignore in a place like this.
Enri takes a moment to consider your words, her head tilted cutely to the side. "You're right, this place creeps me out..."
You let out a sigh of relief and promptly tug her to the north. If you remember your PC correctly, then there should be an exit nearby. Trust silly Enri to forget such important information such as this!
[[Keep going north]] / [[Go west]] / [[Go east]] / [[Go South]]Sleep. It comes quickly— far too fast to be comfortable. Perhaps it's something to do with the way the fibre of the wire rubs against your skin, or the shadow of Enri rocking gently in front of you. It's nice, but it's uncomfortable. Like a seed of worry buried deep in your stomach now suddenly promising to sprout more seeds and more limbs and outstretched roots dig deep into your heart, hot white striking your lungs just a moment before you blissfully pass out.
[[Dream]]Inside your mind, Enri comes back to you, but her image is a bit blurry... Like she's lost behind frosted glass. Which is funny considering just how hot your skin feels. All prickly and blistered, the sight of it causing you to wince in assumed pain.
"Enri!" You call out to her, and you watch as she turns to look at you at the sound of your voice. However, she makes no attempt to conversate back with you. "Enri!!" You try again, but she stands still. Scanlines filter over her, and for a second you worry that you might just be hallucinating. Or even more terrifying, //actually just dreaming.//
Since calling her name is proving fruitless you instead try to walk towards her. But the moment you take your first step you realise that even that route will not be possible.
Stuck in mud. Or the sun. Maybe a bit of both. It'd surely hurt to step foot onto the sun, wouldn't it? And yet there you are, in the stark darkness of the sun, foot pressed into hot lava as the celestial entity threatens to swallow you whole.
//Not another step.// It demands. //I swear! One more step and you'll be in big danger!//
But it's too late. You're toppling over, the very same Summer Sun that's begging you to stay still is practically forcing your body down, beaten with the heavy stick of sunny rays hot against your back. It feels as though your wings are burning to a crisp, if you ever had any... Or like your sweat has turned to oil. It's too much, and it //begs// you to fall over. Sit down, have a little rest, won't you?
[[Rest]]The stink of decay remains.
''ENDING 01: GOODNIGHT''Following your intuition, you keep heading north with little Enri trailing behind. Her grip on your hand is tight, and you wonder if it's because the Summer sweat threatens to cause her grasp to slip.
In front of you there's a little slip of light, hidden behind a little door that's decorated with a bright neon sign that says: EXIT.
"This is it!" You happily exclaim to Enri, letting go of her hand only to clap in excitement. "We found a way out, c'mon, let's go!"
But turning around to face Enri only leaves pain in your heart. A tight coil of innate upset given the expression she's wearing: sorrow. You want to reassure her, promise her with sweet words and soft platitudes that //it'll be okay, all you have to do is follow me//, but even that seems like a monumental task for her.
Softly, almost inaudible with the myriad of machine sounds spinning and whirring around you, the gust of the Autumn wind on your neck as the exist stands tall behind you, she speaks.
"What's the nicest way to say the end?
It's an odd question, but it's not like you didn't expect this outcome, right? The least you can do is answer her honestly. Truth can often be comforting in times of hardship. "With a party, I think."
"But I don't have any balloons... Or cake!" She exclaims, frantically looking around her immediate area for a substitute, but of course, nothing could ever replace some good old chocolate cake. Certainly not metal or wires, anyway.
"Then the next best thing is a hug!"
This answer seems to comfort Enri, and she all too quickly rushes up to hold to you tightly... Like it'll be the last time she ever gets to touch you, even if it's through the filter of technology. Not a real touch by any means, a mere facade in the face of the inevitable, but sometimes you gotta take what you can get.
You stay like that for a few moments more with her. She deserves this. //You// deserve this. Comfort under the blazing sun, each wave of heat whispering an ugly tune of ''enough, stop'', but you're powerless to refuse the melting of two bodies into one. Soon, a piece of you will stay with her. Just a small part, nothing you'll really miss from not having... But it'd mean the world to Enri, and she deserves it as thanks for the time you've spent with her.
[[Let go]]
Despite your better judgement, you suddenly turn west which causes Enri to grow confused.
"But I thought..."
//Liar.// She was never lost to begin with, and you feel a rage as hot as the sun kissing your skin rise within you.
"//Idiot.//" You reprimand her. "I shouldn't even //be here//, you just //had// to get lost again, didn't you?"
The sudden shift in your tone is scaring Enri, and she cowers behind you to try and withstand your verbal assault. Your pace quickens, sweat soaking your brow as you hurriedly shift between the wires, climb over the many bumps and dips of the GPU, shield your eyes from the RGB lights of the fan. "It's all your //fault//." You seethe, unquenchable thirst overtaking you as you pant for just a little clean air. Just a small amount, //please//.
"Wait! Stop, I don't think this is the right—"
"I know where we're going!" You cut off Enri's attempt to soothe the situation, and she only infuriates you more by shutting up. Why is that, you wonder? Why does Enri doing the one thing you want more in this world (for her to shut up) annoy you the most?
There's no time to find a reasonable answer, because you've arrived at your destination. It wasn't your first choice, but rather a last resort option. You turn back to face Enri and watch as she shakes and trembles before you. If only she wasn't so terribly //weak and afraid//— then maybe you'd pity her. Or perhaps you hold no pity because... Things were always going to end this way, regardless of which route you took. Happy endings are rarely the case in real life, and they're even rarer with the Sun promising to melt the very atoms that keep you together.
//Keep going. Almost there. She just needs a little push. I don't care whether it's mental or physical. I've done my part, now it's time to do yours. C'mon, you're so close!//
The fan spins hungrily.
[[Do it]] / [[Don't do it]]Though maybe it would be nice to explore some more of your PC before you truly exit! Sure you may have built it, or at least have viewed its insides on ocassion, but when will you ever get the chance to //really// explore it like a parasite ever again?
"H-Hey, c'mon... I've been stuck in here long enough, haven't I?"
Enri's voice pulls you back to reality, a switch pining back ''on'' in your brain.
"Right. You're right, I'm sorry Enri!"
[[Keep going north]]Briefly, you wonder what power must have compelled you to head back the way you came. Surely there's nothing there, nothing that hasn't been seen or left by you as you traverse the PC innards. And yet still, you feel as though it were a //necessity//.
''Return. Retrace.''
It's not like Enri complains much as you travel back to your spawn point, and in fact, she seems eerily cheerful of your decision to do so. Though it isn't until you fully return to where you once stood that you fully understand as to why she's so happy.
"You chose me, didn't you?"
Oh. Is that the right choice? Can you withstand never drinking water again? Probably not, you're just a human and not a little lost alien girl like Enri. Your skin itches with the white hot pixels pressed against it and your mind feels slow and sluggish as if it were dipped nicely into to lava. Like a cakepop! Though not nearly as tasty.
In any case you suppose that this is as good a choice is any. You like Enri, and you like your PC. It can't be that awful to meld into one, right? A trifecta of hope.
"Sure did!" You lie, though it's not exactly a true lie. More so a lie of omission, which some people hate the most. Thank God Enri is too stupid to pick up on it though.
"Perfect! Then we can begin, right? Right?!"
For some reason you feel a tug to do as she asks despite the pit of despair welling up inside of you. There's just something so persuasive about Summer, isn't there? It's a giving up of sorts. A fatality, allowing the heat to convince you of that which you normally would reject. Can't do much about it when your mind is muddled with the sun and your body feels stuck to the very ground you stand upon.
[[I'm ready.]]But now it's time to move on with your life. Leave the heat behind and instead welcome brisk cold. Crunch beneath your boots, and an unspeakable melancholy. Autumn is coming, and Enri cannot be there to experience it. This has always been, and always will be, the case.
''ENDING 02: GOODBYE''This ending is not the preferred, but it is certainly an ending. What's left is nothing but warmth, a hot failure. She didn't even cry nor complain.
That makes things a little more annoying, really.
''ENDING 04: ENEMY''You try to ignore the Summer softness crawling down your throat, swallowing thick to try and cure your thirst before something really bad happens to you.
But it's pointless. You've come this far for a reason. Why else would you ignore the clear route if not to experience pain? //Do it.//

You're unable to move, and further from that, you're unable to fathom the //want// to move— not when the heat forces you to succumb to lethargy. Whatever Enri has in store for you will have to suffice, because you can't disagree with her regardless.
"All right all right! Let's begin!"
As soon as she hears your confirmation that you're ready, she excitedly bounces up to you. Her bunny ears bob cutely and you can //almost// hear them mumbling at you. It's a conversation they want to have but are physically unable to, for you are not one of them. Frustrating. Annoying. //God//, the heat just won't let up! Beating you down like an old dog taken out to the back of the shed— Summer has exhausted you. Tired you to your very bones, your internal organs resembling more like soup than anything sturdy or tangible.
"Can you feel it? Can you? Can you?!"
At least Enri is excited as you come undone before her, her gaze seemingly speeding up the melting point of your brain. A process of CRTL-Z, upsetting with how hot it is but nonetheless not too unpleasant. You thought that perhaps you'd have passed in a more conventional way. Old age, in your sleep, or maybe by doing something heroic. Summer's like that, really. A time to think, to wish and to hope, because there surely isn't enough energy left to do much else but laze around.
But Enri doesn't judge you for being lazy. She isn't upset that you've given up, nor is she annoyed by the way your eyes can no longer hold her gaze. She smiles as they close, giggles fondly as they roll back. At least there's a small comfort in making her just a little happier, the feeling of her sticky paws grabbing at your arm, and then your arm bone, passing through the flesh as if it never existed to begin with. A puddle of human soup. //Disgusting//— you want to say. //Don't touch me, you'll get dirty!//— you want to warn. But Enri only pets. Strokes her tiny little hand up and down your exposed bone as her hand begins to melt with you.
"It's better this way, I think." She admits in a hushed tone.
''ENDING 03: TOGETHER''"Child, do you really except acceptance from the Sun? Do you truly believe that your ending will be anything but fire and burn?"
Well, when you put it like that...
"It is my job to end you. This is the sole reason I exist. With help comes unhelp, creation with destruction. You exist and unexist only become of me, and here I am at my strongest. Summer beats down on you, boiling your insides clean. Be thankful, for at least now you will be pure."
A silver lining at least, and one can't complain with that!
''ENDING 05: CLEAN''
